Sunshine and You
Sunshine and You
While sturdy, thriving flowers and trees reach up to find the sun, we cower and cover every inch of our bodies because we’re afraid the sun might harm us or even cause cancer. So, is the sun bad for us or is it good for us?
The sun is definitely good for us. We couldn't live without it. And, what about this fear of the sun causing cancer? Well, most malignant melanomas (a type of skin cancer that does kill a lot of people) most often occur on parts of the body that are covered, protected from the sun. And, who has the lowest rate of skin cancer rates? Studies have shown that construction workers and professional shipmen who have the highest exposure to sunlight, and don’t use sunscreen, have the least skin cancer. In fact, more sun exposure reduces the overall risk of cancer. And, in another study, it was found that office workers have higher incidences of skin cancer than those who work outdoors. Why is this? Well, one of the reasons is that when the sunlight hits the skin, with the presence of cholesterol, the body produces Vitamin D. What are the other benefits of sunlight having contact with our skin? Sunlight…
• acts as a catalyst for the absorption and use of nutrients in our bodies
• diminishes apathy, lethargy, dispiritedness
• decreases resting heart rate
• decreases blood pressure
• decreases lactic acid in the blood following exercise (ever feel better after exercising outside rather than inside?)
• increases energy, strength and endurance
• increases tolerance of stress
• increases the ability of our blood to absorb and carry oxygen
• keeps our biological rhythm running smoothly
• balances hormones
• counters SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder)
• lessens the occurrence of dental caries (see Dr. Weston A. Price’s book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration.)
More is being discovered all the time about the benefits of sunlight for both our skin and our eyes. Sunlight is a naturally occurring event which should be embraced because of its invaluable influence on our health.
How do we protect ourselves from burning? How much sun do we need? When should we get it? According to Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation Vice-President David Getoff, CCN, CTN, FAAIM, we want to get at least one-half hour or more of sun, five to six days a week…and never burn. Even the minimum recommended exposure can improve a lot of emotional conditions. He states that we should protect our skin through healthy eating and quality supplements. A diet that has an adequate amount of healthy fats (olive oil, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and fats naturally occurring in properly raised beef, chicken, lamb and other meats), supplemented with Vitamins C and E, and Ogligomeric Proanthocyandins (OPCs) is an excellent start.
David Getoff uses OPC’s (Oligomeric Proanthocyanidin; trademark name: Pycnogenol®) for its sun protection factor. This is a supplement available in health food stores that you can take to protect yourself from burning. The dose is two mg per pound of body weight. You have to take it at least twenty minutes before you need it to give it a chance to get into your system. It gives your body a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of about four or five. This means that if you can stay out in the sun for 30 minutes without burning, you can now stay out 120-150 minutes (30 x 4 or 5). Using an OPC does not block the ability of your body to make vitamin D. It just allows you to stay out in the sun longer without burning.
Burning is what damages the skin, whether it be from a hot frying pan or the sun. In order to prevent burns, slowly develop a tan and get out of the sun before you burn. So, if you know you burn in 30 minutes, then try going outside for fifteen minutes. Think of yourself as an egg (although you probably wouldn’t cook those quite that long)…fifteen minutes on each side. If you’ve gone out for fifteen minutes a number of different times, you develop a tan. If you’re eating enough of the right kinds of fats and supplementing with vitamins C and E, you will be to endure longer sun exposure without burning because you are being protected with antioxidants from the oxidative damaging effects of the UV light.
The optimal time of day for sun exposure is between about 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m as this stimulates the highest amount of Vitamin D production. According to the Vitamin D Council, shadow length is a good measure of how much vitamin D your body will be making. If your shadow is longer than you are, you’re not making any vitamin D. That means that the sun is so far back on the horizon that it is not direct enough for your body to be making vitamin D. Being out between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. will take care of that.
For those of you who prefer to use sunscreens (AFTER you’ve gotten as much sun as you can without burning), these are recommended by David Getoff: UV Natural and Graham’s Sunclear–both from Australia and Lavera from Germany. Keep in mind that sunscreens block out the beneficial UVA and UVB rays but do not block the dangerous UVC rays.
So, improve your health and overall well-being through sunshine. Get out into the sun, soak in its rays, and allow your body to produce natural vitamin D. Eat right, time it right, and protect yourself from burning. The sun has so much good stuff to offer. Don’t miss out on it.

More on SUNGAZING
Sungazing
The Ancient Practice of Sun Gazing
Sun energy is the source that powers the brain. It enters the body through the elements of air, water, fire, and earth. Sunlight enters and leaves the human body most easily and directly through the human eye, provided it isn’t filtered out by colored lenses. The eyes are the grand portals through which sunlight enters the body.
Sun gazing is an ancient practice that can induce healing of body and mind.
The eyes are very complex organs, consisting of 5 billion parts intricately designed and functioning in unity. The primary function of the eye is light-dark perception. Even the most basic, simplest ‘eyes’, such as those belonging to unicellular organisms have no other function but to detect whether the surroundings are light or dark in order to maintain the circadian rhythms.
Acting as a photo lens, the human eye is able to break down the entire spectrum of sunlight into the different color rays – a sort of ocular prism. In a camera, the various rays of light react with the chemicals of the film and encode the pictures you take accordingly. Likewise, upon entering the pineal gland in the brain, the different light rays are chemically encoded in the brain and passed on to the organs and systems in the body.
The vital organs of the body are dependent on specific colors of the light spectrum. For kidney cells to function properly, for example, they require red light. Heart cells need yellow light, and liver cells require green light. Light deficiencies in any of the organs and systems of the body can lead to disease. Regular sun gazing can help restore balance and efficiency to all cells in the body.
The pineal gland is one of the most researched glands of the body. Scientists have established that bright light stimulates the production of serotonin and melatonin in the pineal, but there are other neurochemicals produced by the pineal that have more profound and complex effects apart from regulation of moods, sleep, reproductive function and body temperature.
Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania, including Dr. George C. Brenarr, a leading authority on the pineal gland, observed the sun yogi HRM (Hira Ratan Manek) for 130 days in 2002. They found that his pineal exhibited growth and reactivation. The average size of the pineal is 6×6 mm, but in HRM’s case it was 8×11 mm.
Scientists refer to the pineal gland as the ‘atrophied third eye’. Indeed, it, along with the pituitary, is the third eye chakra or energy center, better referred to as dormant rather than atrophied. According to Max Heindel’s Rosicrucian writings, in the distant past, man was in touch with the inner worlds through an activated pineal and pituitary gland. Considered the most powerful and highest source of ethereal energy available to humans, the third eye has always been important in initiating psychic powers (clairvoyance and seeing auras etc).
To activate the ‘third eye’ and perceive higher dimensions, the pineal and the pituitary must vibrate in unison, which is achieved through meditation or sun gazing. When a correct relationship is established between the personality operating through the pituitary, and the soul operating through the pineal, a magnetic field is created. The pineal can generate its own magnetic field because it contains magnetite. This field can interact with the earth’s magnetic field. The solar wind at dawn, charging the earth’s magnetic field, stimulates the pineal gland. This is why many spiritual teachings claim that the period between 4 and 6 am is the best time to meditate and why sunrise is the best time to sun gaze. At these times, the pineal stimulates the pituitary to secrete Human Growth Hormone. That is why sun gazers often experience rapid nail and hair growth, restoration of hair color, and general rejuvenation. Cleopatra used to place a magnet on her forehead to stimulate the pituitary to restore her youth and good looks. She did not know she already had a magnet in her head.
The technique of sun gazing demands no more than time and attention, and is very simple. One should gaze at the sun only in the morning or evening hours, about one hour or less after sunrise or before sunset. Look at the rising or setting sun once a day. On the first day, look at the sun in a relaxed manner for a maximum of 10 seconds. On the second day, look at it for 20 seconds, adding about ten seconds every succeeding day. After ten continuous days of sun gazing you will be looking at the sun for about 100 seconds. The eyes can blink or flicker and don’t need to be steady. To receive the main benefits of sun gazing, you need to increase the duration in the above manner until you reach three months. This brings you up to the length of 15 minutes of gazing at a time.
At this stage, the sun energy of the sun’s rays passing through the human eye will be charging the hypothalamus tract the pathway behind the retina leading to the human brain. As the brain increasingly receives extra power through this pathway, you will find a drastic reduction of mental tension and worries. With access to this additional source of energy, you are likely to develop a more positive mindset and increased self-confidence. If you suffer from anxieties and depression, you will find that these go away. Sadness and depression are known to increase with reduced or lack of exposure to sunlight. With fewer worries and fears, your brain may use the saved and additionally supplied energy for healing and improvement of mental and physical wellbeing.
One of the most frequently reported benefits of regular sun gazing is improvement of eyesight.

SUN GAZING 101 BY Me
Here YA go!!
If you chose to embark upon the journey of Sungazing, please heed the advice that slow and steady wins the race. I do not recommend this practice to anyone. If the sun seems or feels to bright, well then, don’t look at. If you chose to partake, be very careful, take your time, be cautious, be humble and document your progress.
You can damage your eyes from Sungazing, just as you can burn your feet from walking on fire. I have participated in both practices, my feet and my vision are in perfect working order. We are all wired a bit differently; therefore it is impossible to predict how each individual will process the suns brilliant light. If you wish to partake, by all means enjoy the daily practice. Truly embrace the beginning (or ending) of the day. Feel all the joy the sun has to offer…and of course, if it amuses you to wear a purple top hat while Sungazing; then by all means, make it a beauty.
Remember this the information here is not set in stone, it is simply one man’s suggestion. In fact, this is my interpretation of a man’s suggestion. Depending on life style and location every person may carve out their own form of sungazing. Understand that because of the many differences to take into consideration, the results will most likely be different as well. And that is ok, whatever experiences you experience are still yours and yours alone.
Protocol Depending on the weather and the level of commitment this is only a nine month to a year practice. Once you reach 44 minutes of sungazing you are finished. You should not have the need to stare at the sun any longer, your sungazing is complete. Sungazing is to be practiced standing bare footed on bare earth. Without shoes you can stand on sand, gravel, mud, or bare earth I even wet my feet. Your bare feet should be in contact with the bare earth. Try to avoid standing on tar, concrete, granite, stone or even on grass (the grass absorbs the solar energy). If you happen to stand on any other surfaces, that is fine, the results may simply be a bit different or arrive a bit slower. While the sun is low on the horizon the intensity of the rays will be at a minimum. During this time, the sun's rays are tolerable, and the UV radiation is lower, so the potential of harming your eyes is lower. Use common sense within these parameters, if the sun is too bright and it feels as though it may be burning your eyes, don't stare at it. The best time to learn about your limits is right as the sun rises or a minute or so before it sets. According to the the sunrise holds more energy, vitamins and minerals then the sunset. Go figure. Personally I recommend the sunrise, energetically it is a beautiful balance of yin and yang. You only need the sunrise or the sunset, both may be a bit much. By rushing about you will not find what you are looking for any faster. Be careful and always listen to your body.
To Begin As the sun rises over the horizon simply gaze at the whole glowing ball of light for 10 seconds only. The key is to be relaxed, just like in mediation, let go of all thoughts and become immersed in the moment. Simply, look at it. No stress or strain on the face, facial muscles or eyes. Relax your jaw. Stand at peace, knees bent with your arms at your sides. Let go. If you choose to get up with the chickens, and try gazing at the rising sun. Stay relaxed and receptive for greater assimilation of the beneficial aspects of the sun's rays. Try to become aware of what your body is feeling, how is your mental, emotional and physical state as the sun fills every atom, every electron, and every cell in your body. Feel every tissue filled with the regenerative and healing properties that the sunlight imparts on your body. You may notice an amazing increase in your overall energy as well as your physical stamina and positivism. Be aware of how the sunlight actually cleanses and rebuilds the whole of your being, your mind and thoughts, your feelings and your physical body; total rejuvenation. By completely surrendering to the suns greater power, and as the minutes of sungazing increase, the awareness of your energetic being may Enlighten you dramatically. There is no need to maintain an unblinking, stare. Blink as and when it naturally happens, sort of like watching television. For the first few moments you look into the sun it may be very bright, after about 3-7 seconds of continuous gazing all the brightness generally goes away and you are left staring into a soft ball of pure white light; a beautiful pulsing orb. Don’t squint. If you feel yourself squinting, relax the muscles in your face and eyes. Let the light in. The more open and relaxed the muscles are in your body the more oxygen and energy is able to flow within your cells, and then more light will be allowed in. You have at your disposal an incredible amount of electricity to make things happen in your world. With the aid of sunlight, you can recharge each cell and atom to its full potential. Increase the time you gaze at the sun by a few seconds each day - say by 5 seconds or so per day, until you are comfortable and relaxed with the entire concept of staring into the sun. Once you are comfortable with the concept of sungazing feel free to increase gazing time at a constant rate of 10 seconds per day. You may find it helpful to get a watch or employ a friend to keep tabs on your staring time. Subtle slow increments of time are important for allowing for the rods and cones within the anatomical structure of the eye to adapt to the intense levels light. Increase the sungazing time by 10 seconds each day until you have reached 44 minutes, at which point you should be fully charged. At 44 minutes you are finished with the MY method of sungazing. Depending on weather this may only take nine or ten months.
What to Expect Sungazing can be used as a tool for tapping into your human potential. Some change will occur to reach these peaks; your perceptions may alter circumstances, you may begin to change from the inside out. Change can be uncomfortable. Nonetheless, when we release our physical and emotional energetic blockages these changes will become trivial relative to the incredible expansiveness of the universe. If at least three months are committed to the sungazing practice (reaching 15 minutes of staring time) some sort of change of your perception of your world will occur. We are all energetic beings, vibrating at different frequencies, so we should be comfortable with the concept that all of us are different. There may be many different reactions, sensations and experiences. Remember, whatever happens to you is perfect. It is yours and yours only. At every turn there are lessons to be learned. It may be helpful to become objective in your approach to life, awareness may prove to be an essential ingredient. Be positive and open-minded; feel all there is to feel. Sungazing causes hungers to diminish? There are many theories, all of which include understanding the power of light, and the more subtle mechanisms of the pineal gland, not to mention quantum physics. How is it possible?
Why do we watch the sunrise? Why do we concentrate on it? In order to learn to mobilize all our thoughts, all our desires, and all our energies, and to direct them toward the realization of the highest ideal. A person who works to unify the many chaotic forces that pull him in every direction and to project them in a single, luminous and salutary direction becomes such a powerful center that his presence, like the sun, is able to radiate through space. Yes, he who manages to control the tendencies of his lower nature can spread these blessings over the whole of humanity, and he becomes a sun. He lives in such freedom that he expands the field of his consciousness to include the entire human race, to which he sends the abundance of light and love that pour forth from him.
How to Sungaze
Jesus testified that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. This memorable passage signifies that man's body does not depend only on external sources of life force distillations from; breath, oxygen, sunshine, solids, and liquids but also on a direct inner source of cosmic life that enters the body through the medulla, flowing then to the subtle centers in the brain and spine. In man, the medulla is spoken of as "the mouth of God" because it is the chief opening for the divine influx of cosmic vibratory life force, the "word" that then flows "out of the mouth of God" (the medulla) to the reservoir of life energy in the brain and the distributing centers in the spineFirst of all, let it be understood that achieved his results in a very controlled environment under strict Jain principles. Also, there are many different sungazing practices from cultures around the globe. Some of which are relatively recent and some are as old as the hills. There were some cultures where you could get imprisoned for staring at the sun (only certain priests were allowed). This method is simply one method. In stating that; yes, the sun has enormous power. Yes, you may tap into higher spiritual realms as well as other time and space dimensions. Yes, you can live without food. Yes, you may allow other entities into your space and end up with metallic aliens dancing on your bed .If you chose to embark upon the journey of Sungazing, please heed the advice that slow and steady wins the race. I do not recommend this practice to anyone. If the sun seems or feels to bright, well then, don’t look at.
