Dietary Chlorophyll Helps Us Capture/Use Sunlight Energy, Groundbreaking Study Reveals

An amazing study published in the Journal of Cell Science reveals an entirely new reason why it is essential that you 'eat your greens,' as mother always said, namely: it enables your body's mitochondria to produce more ATP energy when exposed to sunlight.

The study titled, "Light-harvesting chlorophyll pigments enable mammalian mitochondria to capture photonic energy and produce ATP", indicates that by eating a chlorophyll-rich diet mammals (and by implication humans) can capture specific wavelengths of sunlight radiation that will translate into increased energy within the powerhouses of the cell known as the mitochondria.







The researchers, working out of Columbia University Medical Center, conducted a number of experiments in order to ascertain whether animals as well as plants can use light-absorbing chlorophyll molecules to capture light energy for ATP synthesis.



While it has been prevailing wisdom that only plants can use sunlight directly for producing energy (photosynthesis), it can not be denied that not only do many animals consume chlorophyll through their diet but that research has been performed showing chlorophyll metabolites "retain the ability to absorb light in the visible spectrum at wavelengths that can penetrate into animal tissues." (Ferruzzi and Blakeslee, 2007; Ma and Dolphin, 1999). Given these facts, the authors of the new study "sought to elucidate the consequences of light absorption by these potential dietary metabolites." What they discovered was simply remarkable:




We show that dietary metabolites of chlorophyll can enter the circulation, are present in tissues, and can be enriched in the mitochondria. When incubated with a light-capturing metabolite of chlorophyll, isolated mammalian mitochondria and animal-derived tissues, have higher concentrations of ATP when exposed to light, compared with animal tissues not mixed with the metabolite. We demonstrate that the same metabolite increases ATP concentrations, and extends the median life span of Caenorhabditis elegans [worm], upon light exposure; supporting the hypothesis that photonic energy capture through dietary-derived metabolites may be an important means of energy regulation in animals. The presented data are consistent with the hypothesis that metabolites of dietary chlorophyll modulate mitochondrial ATP stores by catalyzing the reduction of coenzyme Q. These findings have implications for our understanding of aging, normal cell function and life on earth.

Discussion



The implications of this study are truly profound. ATP production is essential for the health of our body, from the level of the cell all the way up. When ATP production is compromised through suboptimal nutrition, environmental exposures, or non-adaptive stress, disease and accelerated aging are inevitable. Even when these adverse variables are not a factor, ATP production will naturally fall off as we age, leaving a role for nutritional interventions that can help to increase ATP synthesis without, for instance, increasing oxidative stress or causing exhaustion or imbalances elsewhere. Clearly, a plant-based diet rich in chlorophyll will have certain advantages over one without this compound (and its metabolites). Also, chlorophyll and/or it's metabolites may be an ideal nutritional and/or functional medical intervention for the growing number in the post-industrial world whose cellular machinery is already deeply compromised and functioning far below optimal levels.







If this cell and animal research holds true for humans, a chlorophyll-deficient diet, along with a deficiency of sunlight exposure, would lead to significantly lower ATP production. Given this possibility, wouldn't it be amazing to begin looking at the green wavelengths of color in the produce case as a source of energy for the powerhouses of the cell (mitochondria), as potential age-decelerating agents, or as a means to increase one's sense of energy and health by allowing you to capture the sun's energies directly within your body? By making possible the exposure of our skin to a consistent and significant source of ultraviolet radiation, the genetic mutation leading to hairlessness was positively selected for, leading to a number of downstream effects, including the accelerated growth of the energy-hungry neocortex portion of our brains. Living organisms may use bioluminescence for a variety of reasons, such as communication and display
Bioluminescence describes the light that some living creatures such as fireflies and jellyfish emit from their cells. Harnessing these reactions has already transformed key areas of clinical diagnosis and medical research.

But scientists are now looking at whether this living light could help enhance food crops, detect pollution or even illuminate our journeys home.

On a night in January 1832, off the coast of Tenerife, a young Charles Darwin wandered up on to the deck of the HMS Beagle.

As the young naturalist looked out to sea, he was struck by the unearthly glow emanating from the ocean.

"The sea was luminous in specks and in the wake of the vessel, of a uniform, slightly milky colour," he wrote.

"When the water was put into a bottle, it gave out sparks for some minutes after having been drawn up."

'Natural light'

Fluorescence: Energy from an external source of light is absorbed and re-emitted. Fluorescence can only occur in the presence of this light source; it cannot happen in complete darkness.

Bioluminescence: The energy for light production comes from a chemical reaction in living cells, as opposed to the absorption of photons as happens in fluorescence.

Darwin was almost certainly describing the light emitted by tiny marine organisms called dinoflagellates. His accounts of this phenomenon, known as bioluminescence, were unearthed by Prof Anthony Campbell in hand-written notebooks stored at Cambridge University.

While Darwin was one of the first modern scientists to document the phenomenon, it would be more than a century before it was put to practical use. Prof Campbell, from Cardiff University, carried out pioneering research throughout the 1970s and 1980s leading to the discovery that living creatures produce this light using special proteins called luciferases. The proteins take part in a chemical reaction in the cells, which is responsible for the light emission.

"When I started researching bioluminescence 40 years ago at the Cardiff University medical school, a lot of people raised their eyebrows and said: 'What the devil is this guy doing working on animals in the sea? He was brought from Cambridge to do medical research'," Prof Campbell explains.Huge market

But he was able to spot the phenomenon's potential. Having discovered the proteins involved in bioluminescence, he realised that by combining luciferases with other molecules, it was possible to harness this light emission to measure biological processes.
Bioluminescence could shed light on changes in the marine environment

This would pave the way for something of a revolution in medical research and clinical diagnosis.

For example, by attaching a luminescent protein to an antibody  a protective molecule produced by the body's immune system  it could be used to diagnose disease. This allowed clinicians to dispense with the radioactive markers that had previously been used in such tests.

 If you go into a hospital and have a blood test which measures viral proteins, cancer proteins, hormones, vitamins, bacterial proteins, drugs, it will almost certainly use this technique," Prof Campbell told BBC News.

Bioluminescent proteins are also tools in drug discovery and have found widespread applications in biomedical research, where they are used to study biological processes in live cells.

If you've got a university department that doesn't use these techniques, they are not at the cutting edge, says Campbell.Contamination problem

Other applications are on the horizon. At the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, Prof Jan van der Meer has developed a test for the presence of arsenic in drinking water using genetically modified bacteria.

Arsenic contamination of groundwater is a pernicious problem in some parts of the world, especially in Bangladesh, India, Laos and Vietnam.

Prof van der Meer's microbes have been engineered to emit light when they come into contact with arsenic-containing compounds. Potentially contaminated water is injected into vials, activating the dormant GM bacteria. The extent to which the microbes emit light is then measured to provide an indication of arsenic concentrations in the water.
Could glowing trees one day replace street lights?

The work is now being commercialised by the German firm Arsolux. Prof van der Meer says the bacterial-based kits cope well with multiple samples, require fewer materials than standard chemical testing field kits, and are easy to prepare.

But regulatory hurdles remain to the take-up of bacteria-based tests in these countries. And, Prof van der Meer adds: "In the end it comes down to market things… things you cannot control as a scientist."

So called rainbow proteins a spin-off from work into bioluminescence, which change colour in response to particular compounds, are also an option for detecting environmental toxins, or the potential agents of terrorism.Plant potential

There are already several consumer applications of bioluminescence: one US firm has made use of it to manufacture luminous drinks for sale in nightclubs.

And researchers have even modified plants so that they emit light. Bioluminescent crops could indicate when they require water and nutrients, or warn of disease and infestation. However, the controversy surrounding GM foods has so far prevented these ideas from taking hold.

A few years ago, a team of undergraduates at Cambridge University researched the idea of luminescent trees that would act as natural "street lamps".

What we achieved in that project was to put together some DNA which allowed bioluminescence, to show that it worked in the bacterium E. coli, and to submit it to the 'parts registry' which holds this DNA so anyone else can use it in future," team member Theo Sanderson told BBC News.

"We were approached about a year ago and offered funding to continue developing the project, but we have all gone on to other things and so it wasn't really an option."

Previous efforts to create light-emitting plants in the lab have made use of a luciferase gene derived from fireflies. But these plants can only glow when supplemented with an expensive chemical called luciferin. The method used by the Cambridge team is attractive because it is based on bacterial systems which produce their own fuels for luminescence and so can be fed normal nutrients.

In 2010, a separate team published a study in which they were able to demonstrate that such methods could be used to create plants that glowed without the need for chemical supplements. The US-Israeli team of scientists inserted light-emitting genes from bacteria into the plants' chloroplasts - the structures in their cells which convert light energy from the Sun into chemical fuel.

Mr Sanderson, who now works at the Sanger Institute near Cambridge, said this was a good choice because chloroplasts are essentially bacteria that have become incorporated into plant cells, so they can easily express the microbe-derived gene without the need for other modifications.

But researchers will need to find ways to boost the light emission from such lab organisms if GM trees are ever to light our way through the urban jungle.

Prof Campbell says the potential of luminescent proteins in drug discovery and medical research has not yet been fully exhausted and he is currently collaborating on a project to use luciferases to research Alzheimer's disease.

Bioluminescent creatures might also provide a convenient means of studying environmental changes in the sea. Some animals obtain the light-emitting chemicals they need from the organisms they eat. So studying the interactions between these species might allow scientists to detect changes in marine food webs.

Despite the impact on clinical diagnosis and research, Prof Campbell points out that he has only ever received one grant to research bioluminescence. Nevertheless, he says it is a "beautiful example of how curiosity  quite unexpectedly  has led to major discoveries in biology and medicine. And it has created several billion dollar markets".

THE STRUCTURE OF LIGHT
 a new science about the unknown structure of the light, which up to now light was consider as a ray of energy
All knowledge gathered and learned in every fields of science by man in his cycle of scientific evolution from his beginning of time and up to this point, these are the like of the speck of dust of the universal wisdom in comparison to what man will enjoy from the knowledge which is to be revealed in this disclosure.

With the present knowledge in the plasma technology and the new understanding of the internal structure of the plasma, the light is and can be considered to be a cylindrical version of the spherical plasma the like of the proton and the plasma of the light is in possession of all three magnetic fields of the matters of the plasma.

The ray of light is in possession of Magnetic and gravitational fields and hence its own gravity, mass and Magnetosphere, and due to its dynamism this plasma of the light possesses momentum and hence can carry and transfer this momentum as energy to other light rays, tangible and non-tangible entities.

Thus the speed of the light in the matter environment is not the ultimate speed of matters in the universe, but the speed of light is dictated and controlled by the environmental magnetic field strength which the light operates in.

It is possible to attain faster speeds than the speed of light in a matter magnetic field strength environment by using the magnetic fields properties of the antimatter plasmatic fields.

May be it is the time for the Man to come to understand the true meaning of the light, as all beings in the universe announce their existence through the emission of the light into and onto their surroundings.

This technology of the light ray's protection gives the man the ultimate knowledge for survival and brings the man knowledge and intelligence in par with and equal to the knowledge known to the rest of universal manifestations and the same we have served our purpose in bringing the same to all men of progress.
Reflexion
The light has a plasmatic structure, the same as plasma of the proton and electron, and is made as a mixture of magnetic fields strength with difference that the light has dynamic composite magnetic field strength spiral helixial cylindrical composite matter plasma structure rather than the dynamic composite  spherical structure of the matters the like of the plasma of the neutrons.

With the present knowledge in the plasma technology and the new understanding of the internal structure of the plasma, the light is and can be considered to be a cylindrical version of the spherical plasma like of the proton and the plasma of the light is in possession of all three magnetic fields of the matters of the plasma .

The ray of light is in possession of Magravs and hence its own gravity, mass and Magnetosphere, and due to its dynamism this plasma of the light possesses momentum and hence can carry and transfer this momentum as energy to other light rays, tangible and non-tangible entities.

As the plasma of the light is moving from one dynamic magnetic field strength spherical in shape plasma to another and as each matter's mafs of the plasma of the light interacts with its surrounding environment's plasmatic magnetic fields in any matter environment, then the appropriate matter mafs components of the light and its ever present environment come to interact with the same and different matters and matter mafs in strength of its environment, this leads to less losses of the plasmatic magnetic field (pmf) contents of the mafs of the matters of the ray of light and hence allowing the light to travel in any environment at the speed of its given environment plasmatic magnetic fields strength with less friction and maximum speed in that given pmf strength. Then in matter mafs and matter magnetic fields strength environment, this property allowing the ray of light to have a speed of light in matter environment strength as is observed by man, and where in antimatter environment the antimatter light travels at antimatter magnetic field strength environment, which the speed of antimatter light is far higher than the speed of light in the man's matter plasmatic magnetic field strength environment.

Thus the speed of the light in the matter environment is not the ultimate speed of matters in the universe, but the speed of light is dictated and controlled by the environmental magnetic field strength which the light operates in.

It is possible to attain faster speeds than the speed of light in a matter magnetic field strength environment by using the magnetic fields properties of the antimatter plasmatic fields.

Once understanding this criterion and concept then at this stage one will face the magnetic strength barriers to overcome as one does in the matter environment with sound barrier.

Therefore One has to understand the truth about the real construction of the light and its movement in each plasmatic magnetic field strength environment for the man to be able to travel the spans of the universe with pleasures of being able to observe and learn all the truth about the creation in all pmf strengths which operate in the universe.

Insight into the future use of the structure of light

From the new understanding of the structure of the light, can easily and readily be concluded that if the light did not and was not made of the structure of three mafs of the matters then the light would have not possessed its own gravitational and Magnetic field forces and for example the light from other stars in the universe would have never been able to reach the earth as an individual magnetic field due to the characteristic and properties of the magnetic fields interactions and gravitations, as through magnetic interactions all these rays' of lights would have been absorbed by other magnetic fields and gravitational fields in the universe and the light would have never reached the far distances of the universe. Hence the light as a physical entity which is similar to other physical entities the like of proton, electron, earth and the Sun and the light being in possession of both Magnetic and gravitational fields, the light ray has to find its position in respect to any other object and pmf in the universe as it passes these entities in the universe, and hence in its travels in cosmos light ray has to find it's Magravs positioning in respect to them that this allows the light ray not to be absorbed but to go around these objects. Hence, the reason for the physical observation of the lensing or the bending of the light near these object as the light passing large and strong gravitational object is purely due to its Magravs and its positioning in respect to these entities in the universe.

Therefore the lensing of the light is the confirmation of its existence as dynamic composite magnetic field strength fields physical and tangible entity in position of Magravs, and the light is not a ray of magnetic field in motion or what has been called that the light to be an energy. Whereas, the plasma of the light ray in motion can transfer it Magravs to other matters and thus has the ability to transfer its momentum to other matters and mafs as energy.

Hence due to the fact that the light possess both Magnetic fields and gravitational fields and in line with laws of physics, when the gravity and the Magnetic fields interact (1 and 2), their interaction lead to the creation of entity in possession of its own mass and its own magneto sphere. Where, the interaction of the lights magnetosphere with the magnetosphere of other objects due to their friction leading to release of residual magnetic fields in the matter magnetic field strength level of the human protein, which this makes the point of interaction of two Magravs detectable pmf field or what is called the visible light to human eye and his tools and methods of detection of pmfs in this ranges of filed strength, out of the full magnetic fields spectrum of the universe.

Where, the motion of the dynamic spherical plasma of magnetic field in its travel from one point in the universe to another causes and leads to elongation of the dynamic spherical pmf, hence the restructuring into a dynamic cylindrical plasma ray of the light, and as this plasma of the ray of light reaches the right pmf environment strength that slows down enough or losses its strength, at this point the cylindrical plasma restructures back to its spherical structure and leads to the creation of pmf of matter mafs and matter in given matter pmf strength environment Hence light has the same structure as the pmf of any other plasma known to man like the plasma of electron and proton but in elongated form rather than presently known dynamic spherical shape of tangible matters.

Where, at the same time the plasma of the light in its travels in space can become visible according to the plasmatic magnetic fields of the environment which it travels through and according to the observers' plasmatic magnetic fields strength which in the case of human living Magravs protein molecules structure.

Different proteins have different pmf strength for different creatures in the span of the universe, hence what is visible light to one creature in one point pmf strength in one part of universe this does not mean that to another protein Magravs strength in the same environment this can be visible light too. Hence what is visible light in principal matter or mafs strength, in transition mafs and matter and in matter mafs world in a given matters' magnetic fields environment respectively these light rays are detectible or visible according to the environment and of each mafs and matter in the binding Magravs of the structure of the observer.

The plasma of the light has the capability to present the magnetosphere around itself according to the pmf strength which it is passing through, thus it is the environmental pmf strength which decides the outcome of the mafs of the matter of external layer of the plasma of the light and the final presentation of the light in a given environment.

The plasma of the light to reduces its losses in its pmf of its matters and at the same time allowing it to encounter less resistance for it to be able to travels through the same pmf strength that have less or faces no losses, thus the light ray has the capability of the change of cover mafs and matters of its structure.
Thus it is inevitable to consider and conclude that the light like its larger combinations has its own intelligence and its own internal logical magnetic processing that allows it to survive and exist in every dimension in the universe that it might travel through or be part of. This giving the light the capability of being able to travel long distances, and at the same time, this allowing the light not to have fixed maximum speed in all universal magnetic field strength spectrum opposite to what has been assumed by scientific world at the present.

At the same time, the light becomes more visible or detectable as it travels from stronger matter mafs fields strength to a lower matter fields strength environment.

Two rays of lights with different mafs of the principal matter strength can pass through the same medium and they can create different brightness intensity and therefore all lights rays do not have the same intensity primarily and their strength and intensity is internal initial principal mass and strength dependent.

Therefore a ray of light can be dimmer or slower compared to another ray primarily due to their mafs of the principal matters content and their strength.

Lights have speed according to their lowest common denominator of it environment pmf strength. Therefore, speed of light in Principal environment due to the stronger field strength of the principal mafs pmf is much faster than the speed of the same plasma in the matter environment, hence the present assumption that the speed of the light as observed by man is the maximum speed of the plasma of the light is incorrect, and hence the plasma of the light has speeds in the Principal matter environment far beyond the present assumptions in the matter environment of the earth and this universes matters' pmfs strength.

Even though the formulas used for conversion of main connection of mass and energy looks as to be balancing and to be correct, in fact this equation is only correct for small and minute amount of plasma and only in the matter environment and not in other plasmatic fields environment of principal mafs and mafs of the transition matter or combination and composite plasmatic magnetic fields strength of principal mafs and matters environments and where only individual rays are considered.

Now that one knows that mass is created through secondary effects and interaction of the effects of the interaction and connection of at least two dynamic plasmatic magnetic fields of the gravity and Magnetic fields , which these Gravitational and Magnetic fields both themselves are created and are products of interaction of at least two initial magnetic fields, then in fact mass itself is product of interaction of four fields of two initial fields and two effects of these two fields and hence the formula of relativity now is totally incorrect and has to be rewritten as now one of the factor of the four of the magnetic fields and their combination of their products with each field in position of its own speed of its mafs strength, as energy which is define as magnetic fields in motion, then multiple of speeds of the light in their initial matters mafs strength times the matters mafs of their effect strength in a given mafs strength is the realistic method of

the measuring the energy in respect to the mass of the same matter.

Using this knowledge and understanding the structure of the light and applying these in the space technology and in the space reactors crafts of the future for travel in deep space, then by knowing the mass and the strength of the fields which one needs to be traveling to and by the same principle the strength of the original mafs of pmf can be calculated and measured by using the fundamental application and implication in production of light Magravs strength of the system and of the same of the destination point, then one can estimate the power of the crafts Magravs need to be and at the same time what the speed of the travel of the craft shall have, and using the mafs of the light at that given matter environment, one can calculate what mass of the light the system needs to have and be loaded that the system can travel at a given speed in a given environment, or what speed the craft might have once one uses the certain amount of mass of the light in any combination in any of multiple combined fuelled integrated multiple Magravs positioning reactors of the space crafts of the future
In understanding the strength of the principal mafs fields strength and using this phenomenon for creation of speed of motion of the systems and crafts, then one can calculate and understand that travels with speeds hundreds and thousands of times and millions of time faster than the speed of the light in matter environment in the near future will become as conventional as jet liner travels of today. The assumption that the speed of light in the matter world is the ultimate speed in the universe cannot be correct. This assumption, when using the principal mafs fields as source of fuel in dynamic plasma dilution gravitational positioning space reactors, which have been developed and tested can be used to achieve higher speed than the speed of light in the matter environment.

Through this technology of the use of light gravitational positioning systems, speeds of travel in Principal and Transition mafs strength environments, which are beyond the present understanding of the man in the matter universe are faster than the speed of light in matter environment.

Now one can understand, that once by not using the principal matters as fuel as has been discussed and promoted by some organisation to burn, as has been the habit of the man to burn to attain motion and height in the past centuries, then in using the mafs of the principal matters in creating gravitational fields and Magnetic fields within a gravitational system, then one can travel the length of the universe in times which are not acceptable to man at the present time due to restrictions which has been forced on the humanity by the less knowledgeable scientists of the time and due to their lack of understanding of the creation and control and structure of the light itself.


Then now one has to make new concepts and measuring tools for local time and universal times as these will be different according to the light mafs strength of the space crafts and environment of measurement and new conventional translation for time has to be employed, otherwise traveling in one speed of the light mafs strength and then entering another to live in, this will create untold problems for the future universal travellers of this universe and for the inter-universes travellers of the future . Invariably in the near future one can use the principal mafs and matters magnetic fields for the purpose of transportation in the universe, where from this point on travel with speeds beyond the matter pmf strength environment for travel in the universe and between universes become a natural means of transportation.

At the same time the speed of light in the principal mafs and matters strength is visible light to the man too, with the difference that in this environment as the protein chain of the man contains and is consisted of plasma of electrons and protons, and these plasmas themselves are made of and operating and consisted of the composition of principal mafs and transition mafs and matters  too, then the principle mafs strength of the protein will come into operation and the life will be as normal as one living in the present matter mafs and matter environment of the universe. With a slight difference that he needs to learn about control of the operation of his physical body and his tools of detection in the speed and light configuration.

The parallel world of different pmf strength of matter mafs and mafs of the principal matters are the faster and stronger in pmf strength of life which the Man has come to comprehend and live with and soon he will be able to transmute from one pmf strength of mafs to another and use this knowledge for the advancement of his race and connection and communication in and with the other creature of the universes.

The gravitational field forces of the mafs of the matters of the structure of the light will be the smartest and fastest method for creation and control of space reactors of the future. Then the question for the Man to ask of his existence, is that how does the matter like him, who is the user and the producer of the same physical entities as stars, how does his existence will shine and operate in the span of the universe after the demise of his physical life on this matter strength environment?

May be it is the time for the Man to come to understand the true meaning of the light, as all beings in the universe announce their existence through the emission of the light into and onto their surroundings.

This technology of the light ray's protection gives the man the ultimate knowledge for survival and brings the man knowledge and intelligence in par with and equal to the knowledge known to the rest of the universal manifestations and the same we have served our purpose in bringing the same to all men of progress.

Thus would be correct for the Man to consider his connection beyond his physical existence and through the light of his presence during its time, and hence would the soul of the man be of the light of the confirmation of his existence.

Be wise to the truth of the creation of the man, if the light of wisdom is the light of the soul from the time of beginning to the end of time. This light will exist and will be the source of the confirmation of everlasting existence of his soul, as the light of far distance star after billions of years are shining in the deepest part of the universe, this has been and shall be destined for the soul of the Man throughout all times of the existence of the universe.

Light, Energy, Photosynthesis and Energy Transfer

Light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum

Light is a electromagnetic wave. This wave has a wavelength that can be measured in meters. Of course light waves are very small. Shown below is a chart showing the relationship between the length of the light wave in nanometers as a function of the color of light we humans are able to observe. It turns out that plants respond to these wavelengths (and more!).

Light
is the driving force, the energy for photosynthesis. Light is just one part of the electromagnetic spectrum. A wide range of of the spectrum is shown below. You will notice that wavelengths shorter than visible light include gamma rays, x-rays, and ultraviolet light. Waves longer than visible light include infrared, microwaves and radio waves. You should also notice that shorter waves have higher energy than longer waves. This is why waves shorter than we can see are damaging to our cells and our DNA. We can live with essentially no ill effects from waves longer than visible light.
Starlight is the solar power of the earth

All biological energy comes from sunlight and this energy encompasses the range of the electromagnetic spectrum known as light. The solar spectrum is shown below.

If you remember that visible light covers the range of wavelengths from 400 to 700 nm, then you can see here that sunlight includes waves that are ultraviolet (280 to 400 nm) and waves that are infrared (greater than 700 nm). Fortunately you can see that the difference between curve A and B is maximized in the ultraviolet; we can thank ozone for the sunscreen! The infrared wavelengths are abundant and represent the bulk of solar energy; these provide the heat that keeps us warm and gives us summers. Also shown is the absorption spectrum for chlorophyll. This curve indicates the wavelengths that efficiently drive the photosynthetic reactions.
Chlorophyll absorbs blue and red light

The green pigment, chlorophyll, plays a central role in photosynthesis. The fact that it is green means that it absorbs blue and red light and reflects green when it is illuminated by white (all wavelengths) light. The absorption spectrum you saw before for chlorophyll, is turned sideways below.

It shows two absorption maxima in the blue and red portions in the spectrum. Next to this, is an energy diagram that shows how an electron can be elevated to a higher energy level in the electron cloud of chlorophyll by absorbing a high energy photon. Blue is at the high-energy end of the spectrum, so light of this wavelength is responsible for this much excitation and explains the absorption peak in the blue. Red wavelengths are lower in energy and only boost the electron to a lower energy level than can blue light. This stable excitation state is responsible for the red absorption peak.
Excited electrons can fluoresce

You can also see in the figure above, that when an electron is in the lower excited state, it can drop back to the ground state and the energy lost can be re-emitted as a photon of light in a process known as fluorescence. This light is, of course at a lower energy level, thanks to the second law of thermodynamics. That means of course that the re-emitted photon is of a longer wavelength. Chlorophyll fluoresces at a deep-wine-red color at the limit of human vision. Please note, of course, that in an intact chloroplast the energy is seldom re-emitted; instead the energy and the excited electron are stripped from chlorophyll. They are taken from chlorophyll and sent through and electron transfer system. The energy is ultimately trapped in a phosphate bond in ATP (photophosphorylation) and in an energy rich molecule known as NADPH. We shall see more of that below.
Chlorophyll structure explains its functions

Chlorophyll structure reveals the mechanism of its absorption of light, the excitation of its electrons, and its ability to give electrons off to an electron transfer system:

The tetrapyrrole ring system is a hydrophilic portion. It chelates a magnesium ion which, like most metal ions, has a large cloud of electrons to which it can add to or lose electrons without much problem...just a charge change. The tetrapyrrole ring system that chelates this magnesium shows a system of conjugated double bonds that expands the electron cloud by resonance of the conjugated bonds. These bonds also provide the light absorption features of the chlorophyll molecule that give it the green color. The difference in one ring distinguishes chlorophyll a (a reaction center pigment) from chlorophyll b (an antenna pigment). The structural similarity of these molecules to bacteriochlorophyll indicates the prokaryotic origin of chlorophyll and is further evidence for the endosymbiont theory for the origin of chloroplasts.

The long phytol tail of chlorophyll is hydrophobic and the resulting amphipathic nature of the complete molecule allows it to integrate into membranes and hydrophobic domains of membrane proteins.
Chlorophyll is not the only photosynthetic pigment

While chlorophyll a plays a very important role in photosynthesis, plants have additional pigments that participate in photosynthesis. These are indeed called antenna pigments. For true plants, which taxonomists are generally defining as green algae, bryophytes, ferns, and seed plants, the pigments for photosynthesis are chlorophylls a and b, carotenoids, and xanthophylls. In the figure above you can see that the structures of β-carotene, zeaxanthin, and lutein are also hydrophobic and thus integrate into chloroplast photosystems. These pigments are apomomrphies...cyanobacteria used phycobilin pigments instead.
Antenna pigments enhance photosynthetic efficiency

As you can see above, β-carotene and the two xanthophylls also have conjugated double bonds and rings at either end, this gives the molecules the ability to absorb light. These are yellow-orange pigments and they absorb light in the blue and green areas of the visible spectrum.

What is worth noting here is how these pigments complement the absorption of light by chlorophyll. This means that plants with these antenna pigments can use light of wavelengths that do not excite chlorophyll. The energy absorbed by those pigments is passed to chlorophyll and used in photosynthesis:

You can see how light energy absorbed by antenna pigment molecules (chlorophyll b and β-carotene) is transferred ultimately to a chlorophyll a reaction center pigment to drive photosynthesis. This fact is verified by the quantum efficiency of photosynthesis...
Light waves have amplitude

Light waves have crests and valleys of a particular height or amplitude. This parameter of waves is percieved as brightness or intensity. There are a range of units for this parameter, both English and Metric...depending on the source, the surface, or the passage. But below is a comparison of amplitudes based on the English unit, the foot-candle. It is the light produced by a candle as measured one-foot from the flame...not too "scientific" but it does have some fun powers-of-ten relationships that make it memorable.

In laboratory, we will use metric units for measuring light intensity. But before we leave English units, I'd like you to understand the relationship between light intensity and photosynthesis and respiration (see below). Obviously respiration does not respond to light so its curve is completely flat. Photosynthesis increases as you increase the light intensity from darkness. Where these two curves intersect, the rate of photosynthesis, measured as oxygen produced, matches the rate of respiration, measured as oxygen consumed. (Obviously one could measure the reactions by carbon dioxide or sugar, etc.)

The light intensity (in whatever units used) where these curves intersect is called the compensation point. When plants are kept at intensities above the compensation point, they are doing photosynthesis faster than they are using up the products in respiration. So at these higher intensities, the plant can add to its reserves, can grow, or can reproduce. However, whenever a plant is at intensities below the compensation point, it is burning up photosynthate faster than it is being produced. Kept here for any length of time it will be using up its reserves, and may even die. In the graph above, the plant has a compensation point that is below that found in most rooms of a house; such a plant is likely a potential houseplant. Ferns and African violets may be among these.

Not every plant has the same compensation point, as you might expect! Indeed in the figure below, two plant responses to light intensity are shown. The assumption made in the figure is that the rate of respiration in both plant A and plant B are the same (this may not be a valid assumption!). You will notice that plant B is far less efficient in photosynthesis; it takes much more light to reach its compensation point. Plant B is likely a crop plant such as corn or soybeans; they would never make it as houseplants. You might also notice how houseplants "burn up" (their photosystems bleach out!) when exposed to extremely high light intensity.
Light also has particle properties: photons

The light wave passes a point much like a particle. These "packets" of light are called photons. In fact in plant physiology we usuallly measure light intensity as photon flux density (PFD) measured in units of photons m-2 s-1. /p>

If photosynthesis were to be completely efficient, the production of an oxygen molecule in photosynthesis theoretically requires just four protons and four electrons. However, in actual measurements, the quantum efficiency observed is about 10 photons per oxygen molecule. This is shown in the classic (1932) quantum efficiency plot of Emerson and Arnold:

This plot also shows that up to 2500 chlorophyll molecules can be involved in producing this oxygen molecule. At the time of Emerson, this seemed troubling but now we know that the light harvesting complex for the two photosysytems each contain a few hundred chlorophylls, and they both must operate four times to make the oxygen molecule. A quick calculation reveals that Emerson's figures were very close to the mark (300 x 2 x 4 = 2400)! The quantum yield is the slope on this curve and this works out to 10 photons needed to make one molecule of oxygen.
A wide range of wavelengths drive photosynthesis

Emerson went on to study the effect of wavelength on photosynthesis. This kind of plot is sometimes called an "action spectrum", it shows how effectively various wavelengths drive photosynthesis. Superimposed on this plot we see the quantum yield as a function of wavelenth of the photons. In both sets of curves, you can see that photons of green wavelength are less efficient than those in blue and red wavelengths. Photons with wavelength beyond 700 lack sufficient energy to drive photosynthesis! Recall that blue wavelengths have higher energy than red wavelengths. This fact tells us that whatever pigments are involved in photosynthesis, they apparently have a minimum energy required to excite an electron that is found in a red photon.

You can see that all but a few wavelengths between 500 and 575 nm are fairly effective for photosynthesis. The lower yield for the 500-575 nm (green) range of the spectrum explains the green color of plants. These wavelengths are reflected and transmitted rather than being as effective in driving the process. The absorption spectrum shown is for a chloroplast, obviously antenna pigments are at work here. What is critical to notice is the huge drop in efficiency at 700 nm; this is known as the "red drop" effect. Wavelengths beyond 700 nm are apparently of insufficient energy to drive any part of photosynthesis. Obviouslysome wavelengths cannot drive photosynthesis.
Red and Far-Red Light are Synergistic

Emerson also tried combining wavelengths and observed that red light (680 nm) could drive a certain amount of photosynthesis; far-red light (700 nm) could drive a similar amount. When the two colors of light were combined, the amount of photosynthesis yield was greater than the sum of the individual color yields:

This was called the Emerson enhancement effect and was the first good evidence that there were two photosystems, that one absorbed red light and the other absorbed far-red light, and that they both must operate to drive photosynthesis most effectively.
The Light Reactions are an Energy Transfer system

Using the information of Emerson, and further evidence since then, the basic photosystems for photosynthesis can be diagrammed. The need for two systems is explained when the system's energy is plotted on a vertical redox potential axis. Redox potentials that are oxidizing are at the bottom and those that are reducing are at the top. The light reactions of photosynthesis have often been sketched in the form of what is often called the Z scheme. I know it looks more like an N scheme...and here we emphasize the pigments and the light. In this particular sketch, the electron transfer system in the middle of the diagram has been omitted (more on that later!).

I really cannot tell you why we still call it a Z scheme when it looks like an N in most diagrams (as in the one above)...except that it was originally drawn sideways. What you should notice for now, is that the red-driven (680 nm) photosystem (PSII) and the far-red-driven (700 nm) photosystem (PSI) cooperate to transfer electrons from the photolysis of water to a B-vitamin known as NADP+.

Thinking of this system, you can see that an electron is excited by light energy absorption in a P680 chlorophyll, a reaction center pigment in PSII. This electron is passed through an electron transfer to PSI. The electron lost is replaced by the photolysis of water. This reaction is sometimes called the Hill reaction in honor of Robin Hill who studied it. Photolysis of water is the source of the oxygen produced in photosynthesis. The electron that left PSII and passed through the electron transfer system replaces an electron that is lost by PSI after it is excited by 700 nm light energy. This electron is ultimately trapped with an accompanying proton onto NADP+, a high-energy vitamin B molecule. You should also notice that PSI is not a strong enough oxidant to draw electrons from photolysis of water, and that the energized PSII is not a strong enough reductant to donate electrons to NADP+. Thus, both photosystems are needed to both oxidize water and to reduce NADP+...this explains why Emerson observed the (red/far-red) enhancement effect.
